Description: This lesson provides an illustrated reading passage about the life of a Native American artist Virgil James, a Choctaw Indian who grew up in Oklahoma. It discusses the importance of art among early Native American people who consider themselves a part of the great beauty of nature. The earth provides us with many materials for art forms. This activity also includes a Career Inventory to assist students in planning their future. Objectives include: Students will become aware that Native American craftspeople, and all others who share any skill, are keeping history alive; they are the links to the past and preservers of our culture.Students will understand and appreciate their cultural history through its art. Students will develop a respect for the contributions of the craftspeople in their area. Students will develop pride in their heritage.
