Description: This lesson provides a reading passage about the career of Laurence Brown, a Navajo chemical engineer. It introduces students to the the field of chemical engineering and terms associated with chemistry. It explains that a solution is the mixture of two or more substances, one of which is dissolved in the other. Students in groups of three or four are given recipes and materials. They are instructed to try to identify the properties of the mystery mixtures. Objectives: Students will identify the properties of each mystery mixture.
