Lesson Summary and Performance Tasks:
In
these lessons the students will first read an autobiography of a world famous
artist from Santa Clara, New Mexico. After reading they will create a timeline
of important events in the life of Pablita Velarde. Next students will complete
a family tree that goes back at least tree generations. After completing their
family tree they will find one relative that was born around the same time as
Pablita to interview. Then students
will read an Indian Legend from Old Father Story Teller and complete a
project a hands on project about the book. At this point the students will
watch and discuss a video about the artist. The culminating activity will be a
virtual field trip to Bandelier National Park or for students that live in NM a
visit to the park.

Culture Content and Strategies:
Pablita
Velarde is an excellent role model for Pueblo students (for all students) in
overcoming adversity. Her works also share important cultural information about
herself and pueblo life.
