INSTRUCTION

Goal: Students will learn how to plan and preparing a traditional grinding stones.

Behavioral Objectives: Students will:

• Identify tsédaashch’íní (small stone on top) and tsédaashjéé’ (large stone on bottom)
• Describe how it is used

American Indian Standards:

Develop an understanding of the innate properties of objects and materials were (and are) recognized by traditional American Indian cultures in the manufacture and use of specific tools and material objects that capitalize upon those properties. [properties of objects and materials]

INSTRUCTION

Prior Knowledge Needed: students will:

• Recognize grinding stones
• Know what materials is used
• Will knowledge of caring for grinding stones

Materials and Resources Needed:

• Clay
• Various herbs (cedar, animal’s waste, and yucca plant)
• Kernel corn
• Goat skin
• Navajo brush comb
• Navajo basket
• Middle-sized stone

Culture Content and Strategies:

Traditional grinding stones

Lesson Summary and Performance Tasks:

• The students will sit in a large group and teacher will initiate a discussion about the grinding stones
• Demonstrate how the grinding stone is used
• Will practice using the grinding stones

Assessment:

• Checklist (observation of participation)
• Oral presentation by group leader
• Write three things they learned from the presentation.

EXTENTION

Technology Integration: Students will:

• Create a Power Point presentation of projects, activities of the grinding stones
• Use paint programs to draw pictures of grinding stones
• Create HypeStudio™ stacks using scanned pictures
• Write simple description of each item of grinding stones

Enrichment/Remediation: Students will:

• Use clay to create grinding stones
