INSTRUCTION

 

Goal: To learn a melody to and discuss the meaning of the lyrics in both English and Oneida.

 

Behavioral Objectives: The student will

   Sing the melody in Oneida and in English

   Discuss how the words to this song demonstrate important feelings of the Oneida people.

 

Prior Knowledge Needed: 

   Pronounciation of the Oneida language.

   Basic note reading

   Follow musical map

 

Materials and Resources Needed:

   Copy of the song Children Go Where I Send Thee

   Copy of the meaning of the words put in the Oneida Language

   Piano or melody instrument

 

Cultural Content:

The words to the song discuss the thankfulness of the Oneida people to Mother Earth as well as other cultural ideals that are important to the people.

 

Lesson Summary and Performance Tasks:             

The lesson will provide the students with the opportunity to understand the meaning of the song. The lesson will demonstrate, how the song relates to the culture, traditions and beliefs of the tribe. The teacher will use a transparency to assist students in the beginning, but will progressively remove the support of the transparency.

 

 

Assessment:  Rubric (4 to 1 scale)

4  The students will be able to sing the song unaided in the Oneida Language with the correct pronunciation.

3  The students will be able to sing the song unaided in the Oneida Language with the correct pronunciation without the aid of a leader and with the transparency.

2  The students will be able to sing the song unaided in the Oneida Language with the correct pronunciation with the aid of a leader sometimes and the transparency.

1  The students will be able to sing the song unaided in the Oneida Language with the correct pronunciation with the aid of a leader and the transparency.

 

 

EXTENSION
