INSTRUCTION

Goal: To learn about corn plants and how to care for them

Behavioral Objectives: Students will:

• Name and describe three edible plants
• Plant corn kernels native to Laguna Pueblo (Indian Corn)
• Care for their individual plants
• Compare and contrast ears of Indian corn to sweet corn

Prior Knowledge Needed:

Basic knowledge about plants

Materials and Resources Needed:

· Soil

· Paper cups

· Seeds

· Water

Culture Content and Strategies:

• The teacher and students will invite an elder to come and share with them the values of planting at Laguna Pueblo.
• The students will know the difference between Indian corn and the sweet corn and their uses.

Lesson Summary and Performance Tasks:

• The students will sit in a group while the teacher introduces the two types of corn, one ear of Indian corn and one ear of sweet corn. The students will be able to hold the ears of corn and compare and contrast the difference between the two in a group discussion.
• Following the discussion the students will take some kernels off the ears of corn and plant them in cups.
• The student will then be the caretakers’ of their individual plants.

Assessment:

• The students will watch and then sketch their plants as they grow each week. Sketches will be assessed by rubric for accuracy of information.
• The students will illustrate and write four things they learned about planting. Sketches will be assessed by rubric for accuracy of information.

EXTENSION

Technology Integration: With the help of the teacher:

· The students will use the computer to type out their stories about planting.

· The students will use the computer to find information about corn and their uses on the Internet.

Enrichment/Remediation:

· The students will draw an ear of corn and label each part of the corn.

· The students will take their plants home and with the help of their parents they will transplant their corn plant into the ground.
