Major Goal of Four Directions:
Develop Culturally Responsive Curriculum Using Technology
Project Focus:
Integrating Native American culture and technology into education in a way that enables students to maintain and learn their heritage while taking full advantage of their future
Tribes are unique, one from another
- Each has own history, language, culture and traditional knowledge
- The constraints, restrictions and allowable behaviors vary from tribe to tribe
- Respect restrictions to information suggested by tribal leaders and elders
American Indian schools and communities
- Have little accurate information about Native American or Indigenous culture
- Have very limited access to information from others that may be of benefit to their communities (lack of public libraries)
- Lack of culturally responsive curriculum and instructional methods
School textbooks and instructional programs often fail to support Indigenous cultural values. There is a lack of curriculum materials reflecting tribal history, culture and traditional knowledge. The 4Directions project helps schools address these shortcomings using technology.
