The Dine Clan system provides for kinship relations among the Dine people particularly the extended family.  The system provides the teaching of history, legends, stories and methodology of the values reference to the philosophy of the Dine.

The primary belief is that there are four main clans that is regarded the original clans and from these clans adopted clans have developed over time.  We have at least over forty or more clans.

The four original clans are:

1.  Kinyaaani          -  The Towering House clan

2.  Honaghaanii     -  One Who Walks Around clan

3.  Todichiinii        -  Bitter Water clan

4.  Totsohnii          -  Big Water clan

According to history and legend is that the four original clans receive its origin from the White Shell Woman as she return to the Pacific Ocean to the west where she resides today.

The four original clans were given protectors of animals and also included, a cane to each clan.  This is to further define the clan.  The clans were each given instructions of life, for generations to follow.  These instructions include the following major areas:

  1. History
  2. Teachings
  3. Prayers
  4. Songs
