Four Directions Site Visit to Santa Clara School

Visit Made By: Brian Newberry

Dates Of Visit: 11-12 January

Goals:
1) assist Robin Rodar in configuring web server for intranet use
2) discuss Summer Institute with SCDS staff
3) support Haskell Teacher Ed Mentoring
4) assist teachers/classes in developing intranet resources

Objectives:
1) configure SCDS web server to support the school's development of an intranet
2) ensure that the majority of the SCDS staff had information about SI 99
3) create at least one web page per classroom

Activities:

On 11-Jan-99 I worked with Robin to configure the NT server to support web pages. We also worked on a variety of machines to get them working. A staff meeting was held and we discussed the Four Directions project and SI 99. People in attendance:

Rose Naranjo, Arlene Romero, Patty Madrid, Kathy Warren, Elsie Casados, Scot Carmody, Phyllis Jenkins, Robin Rodar, Frank Nordstrom.

On 12-Jan-99 the schedule for developing class intranet pages was:

9:00 - 10:00    Kindergarten

12:15 - 1:00    First Grade

Outcomes:
The SCDS server now works as a web server. Every class except the Fifth and Third grades has a web page for the intranet. The staff at large of SCDS has a better idea of what is expected during Summer Institute.

Evaluation Of Site Visit:

This site visit was very productive although intense. Due to scheduling the classroom activities were compressed and could have benefited from more time.

Recommendations:
SCDS should continue to create web resources for their intranet. We should encourage SCDS to create a public web site to represent their school. More effort could take place at SCDS to ensure that Four Directions activities penetrate to all classrooms. The garden project at SCDS is a key feature of the curriculum and if possible future site visits might coincide with key times in the cycle of the garden, planning, soil preparation, planting, harvest to work with these events to create curriculum resources using technology.
