Four Directions at NIEA 1999

In October 1999 the Four Directions project provided a series of workshops for the National Indian Educators Association conference, which was held in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Even before the week began students from Indian Island and Oneida schools created a website for the conference. This website included schedules of the proceedings and maps locating nearby hotels and other sites of interest.

The conference began with a full day workshop with 22 participants. This workshop included sessions on creating instructional resources with HyperStudio, Quick Time Virtual Reality, Real Audio, and others.

Each day of the conference, individuals from various Four Directions schools, including students, provided sessions on developing web sites, searching the Internet and basic computer literacy. In between sessions these same Four Directions personnel provided one on one assistance to individuals using the computer lab facilities.

The NIEA technology committee did a great job getting the best equipment for the lab. There were more than 20 Gateway computers, A superior internet connection provided by Southwestern Bell, and a lot of workers who helped put it all together who were coordinated by the people from the Oklahoma contingent of the South Central Regional Technical Assistance Center. In addition, the South Central Regional Technical Assistance Center of Oklahoma provided support for some participant travel and paid to have CD ROMS of the work done for the participants of the one day workshop created.
